A little insight to our amazing Art sketch book work across the school…

Local artist visit

Beacon Class welcomed local artist Angela Wakefield into school for careers week. She talked about her exciting career as an artist and showed them some of her original artwork. She even had a look at their own sketchbooks – she was blown away by their talent and creativity!

KS1 enjoyed a wonderful textile workshop led by Sarah a digital textile designer.

Year 5&6 have been studying facial proportions and have produced some fantastic pencil drawing of their real-life heroes.

Van Gogh Alive!

Our Key Stage 2 children visited the inspirational ‘Van Gogh Alive’ exhibition at Media City, a multisensory experience which took us on a journey through the artist’s life and many works of art. It was amazing!

Advent service artwork

Following our Van Gogh exhibition visit, we have been inspired to try out Van Gogh’s style for ourselves. Beacon Class have created Starry Night swirls using a limited palette of blues, purple and yellow mimicking the Impressionist style of Van Gogh. They then used these to create a piece of collaborative art for a virtual advent service with other local schools. Their brief was ‘joy’ – the joy of the birth of Jesus was the theme they chose and they are very proud of their beautiful creation with a 3d element too!

Habitat Corners

Year 5&6 have created habitats for their very own species, designed with specific characteristics to enable them to survive in these extreme environments. These were then brought to life through animations using the Puppetpals app with some fantastic David Attenborough style documentary voice-overs!

Royal Academy of Arts Summer Show

We are very excited to be taking part in this year’s Royal Academy Young Artist’s Summer Show! Children from Parlick and Beacon Class have submitted entries to the competition which is being judged throughout May. The selected artworks will be exhibited in the London Gallery over summer. Whatever the outcome, I think every entry is worthy of being displayed in a gallery! Here are some of our entries…

KS2 UFA – A study of The Angel of The North sculpture

Year 5&6 – Observational drawing & painting of dissected fruit

From human eyes to dragon eyes!

Year 5&6 have been learning about legends from around the UK and have been inspired by lots of stories featuring dragons, including Michael Morpurgo’s Beowulf. They studied the human eye as a starting point, focusing on shading, contrast and colour. From this, they designed their own dragon eyes inspired by some amazing reptile eyes, then sculpted clay models of their designs. The results are amazing!

Creation Embroidery

Following on from an RE lesson about the story of creation from the Book of Genesis, year 5&6 designed their own creation picture of something they were thankful to God for and have recreated their designs in the form of an embroidered picture using embroidery thread and binca . They have incorporated their choice of stitches for different effects including cross stitch, running stitch and diagonal stitch.

Fruit study

Year 5&6 have been practising their observational drawing and painting skills with a study of dissected fruit. They focused on capturing detail accurately and colour mixing to replicate colours in natural objects. They photographed their finished paintings and used the ‘paint’ app to layer multiple copies…

Harris Museum Visit – Gloria Victis

Thank you to The Harris Museum for bringing in and unveiling the sculpture in assembly. We have had a very special Art day and the whole school are responding to the beautiful sculpture in their own way..

Art Policy 2019

We have links with The Harris Museum and UCLAN (to study multicultural art) and we undertake Art, craft and design activities in UFA, using our school minibus to visit art galleries and work there with local artists. All children have sketch books.

We actively encourage our children to develop artistic awareness and acquire skills, knowledge and understanding to express individual ideas. Teaching should ensure that ‘investigating and making’ includes ‘exploring and developing ideas’ and ‘evaluating and developing’ work. ‘Knowledge and understanding’ should inform this process.

Art is taught mainly through class topics, linked to the National Curriculum. ICT is used to support Art and Design through Graphics software and the use of effects when producing photographs taken with the digital cameras. ICT should be used to inform about the life, techniques and impact of artists at both a local and global level.

Purpose of study

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Aims

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

We have a love of Art and Design at St.Francis’ because it can give us all opportunities to shine creatively. This is an integral subject in our curriculum and it is used in many cross-curricular ways. The children have sketch books and they have success criteria and key learning objectives to support their skills progression. We award an Art trophy at the end of each school year alongside our music trophy.
