Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community. The frequency and range of children’s personal experiences increases their knowledge and sense of the world around them – from visiting parks, libraries and museums to meeting important members of society such as police officers, nurses and firefighters.
In addition, listening to a broad selection of stories, non-fiction, rhymes and poems will foster their understanding of our culturally, socially, technologically and ecologically diverse world.
As well as building important knowledge, this extends their familiarity with words that support understanding across domains.
Enriching and widening children’s vocabulary will support later reading comprehension.
Today, Mrs Eccles brought 6 Quail chicks for us to meet. We looked at what they look like when they are fully grown, had a stroke and the children asked some great questions about what they eat, how big they grow and how old they are.
Understanding how seeds grow.
We have planted peas, Broad beans and miniature French beans in our garden. We will observe them and record their growth and changes. We have also put one of each bean into a plastic folder on our window so we can see how they grow.

We got all dressed up today for our police visit. We chatted about how to be safe, how to stay with our parents, stranger danger and people who can help us. We were very excited to visit the police car and we even got to sit inside.
Today we had a visit from our friends the paramedics. We got to look inside and sit in the ambulance. We even got to see the lights and hear the very loud sirens.
What is a mini beast?
We have been learning that a mini beast doesn’t have any bones in its body. They are small and live in micro habitats. We had a go at drawing some mini beasts after we went on a walk to find some mini beasts and we counted as we drew their legs. We had a go at writing numbers 0, 6, 8 and 14.
National Bird Watching Week –
We enjoyed making bird houses, bird feeders and watching the birds through our window, feeding from our window feeders. We went on bird watch walks and spotted birds in and around our wonderful school.
